Public reference API

Read-only GET requests. No login or key required. Responses include translation, version, license, verse text, speech segments, notes, and citation links. Cross-origin reads are allowed.

Passages support one chapter or a verse range within a chapter. Book names, standard abbreviations, and numbered-book aliases are accepted. Search matches all entered words, ignoring case and accents; punctuation otherwise remains significant. With jesusOnly=true, search matches only publisher-marked Jesus-speech segments.

Search: q is 2–120 characters; limit is 1–50 (default 20); offset is 0–10000 (default 0); optional book uses the catalog’s slug. Invalid search input returns 400; unknown passages return 404.

Source, accuracy & licensing

The official eBible.org structured HTML archive supplies every verse and its wj Jesus-speech annotations. Layout whitespace is normalized; words and punctuation are preserved. Footnotes and cross-references are stored separately. Speech attribution follows the publisher’s editorial annotations.

All 459 pages of the linked New Testament PDF were extracted for edition/scope checks, with representative passages compared against the structured text. The import validates all 27 books and 260 chapters. Luke 17:36 is a note-only textual variant in this edition; its source note is retained rather than inventing verse text.

Versioned downloads have checksums in the manifest, including checksums for the source archive and PDF. JSON contains metadata, the book catalog, and verses; JSONL has one verse per line; CSV stores segments and notes as JSON within their columns.
