One night in Jerusalem a respected teacher came looking for Jesus—and heard that seeing God's kingdom begins with a new birth from above.
One simple fact
In John 3, Nicodemus—a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council—comes to Jesus at night and acknowledges Him as a teacher from God. Jesus answers that no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again (or “from above”; the Greek anōthen carries both senses). The exchange continues with birth of water and Spirit, and it is the setting for the famous words of John 3:16. Read the full dialogue in the NIV on Bible Gateway.
Jesus' own words
“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
Today’s Words of Jesus quote: Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.
Historical backdrop
Longing for God's Spirit to renew a people was already alive in Second Temple Judaism. Among the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Community Rule (1QS) speaks of a “spirit of holiness” that unites the community, cleanses from iniquity, and establishes a living house for God's presence—more than animal sacrifice alone. A public overview of that Rule and its hope of God's visitation is in PBS FRONTLINE’s portrait of the Dead Sea Scrolls community. For scholarly discussion of holy-spirit language at Qumran beside New Testament teaching, see F.F. Bruce’s essay “Holy Spirit in the Qumran Texts”.
Against that shared hope of Spirit-renewal, Jesus tells a teacher of Israel that entering the kingdom is not more learning alone—it is being born of water and the Spirit.
A firsthand encounter
Darrell C. reports that after a heart attack he was placed on life support and flatlined for twelve minutes. Hovering above his bed, he saw a beautiful blue, shimmering light between himself and his wife—a presence of profound love he identified with the Holy Spirit. When he later woke from an induced coma, his first words were that he would serve the Lord the rest of his life. Looking back he wrote that before the experience he thought he was a Christian but was not born again—he just went to church. Since then, he says, he has spent every waking moment serving the Lord. Reported on the Near Death Experience Research Foundation: Darrell C NDE 9220.
Jesus told Nicodemus that seeing the kingdom requires a birth from above. Darrell’s account, told in his own words, points the same way: the Spirit who renews still meets people at the edge of death and calls them into a life that is truly new.
