I Am the Good Shepherd: Jesus Who Knows His Sheep by Name

I Am the Good Shepherd

Long before crosses or fish symbols became common, some of the earliest Christians painted Jesus as a shepherd carrying a sheep on his shoulders. They took that picture from His own words.

One simple fact

In John 10, Jesus says "I am the good shepherd" twice, in verse 11 and again in verse 14. It is one of the seven "I am" sayings in John's Gospel. (John 10:1-18, NIV, Bible Gateway)

Jesus in His own words

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."

"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me."

"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

A hired hand runs when the wolf comes, Jesus said, but the shepherd stays. He does not just guide the flock; He gives His life for it, and He knows each sheep by name (John 10:3).

A historical reference: the Good Shepherd at Dura-Europos

In 1932, Yale and French archaeologists uncovered a house in Dura-Europos, Syria, that had been turned into a church around A.D. 240, more than seventy years before Constantine legalized Christianity. Over its baptismal font was a painting of a shepherd with a ram on his shoulders, watching over his flock. Yale University Art Gallery, which holds the painting, explains that it symbolized Christ and His flock, and that people baptized in that room would have seen themselves as the sheep, protected by Christ. It is dated about A.D. 232 and is one of the oldest known pictures of Jesus.

A witness: "I saw Jesus dressed as the shepherd"

Sara G shared her account with the Near Death Experience Research Foundation. In 1983 she was hit by a car going 65 miles per hour and lay in a coma for eight days. She described being lifted into a field of long grass that "doesn't belong on this earth," and wrote:

"I saw Jesus dressed as the shepherd... Jesus kept extending his right hand and telling that I could stay or that could go."

She reported waking to find her mother kneeling and praying at her bedside, and that her doctors, who had given her a twenty percent chance of waking, called her recovery a miracle. This is her own account as she reported it.

For today

The shepherd in John 10 does not wait for the sheep to find their own way home. He calls them by name and goes ahead of them. Today, listen for His voice, and follow.
