I Am the Resurrection and the Life: Jesus at Lazarus's Tomb

Jesus Research · 9/23/2026

Hope Personified

At Bethany, facing Martha's grief, Jesus did more than predict a future resurrection. He identified Himself as resurrection and life in the present tense—a claim verified days later when Lazarus walked out of the tomb.

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.’” — John 11:25 (NIV)

John's Gospel then narrates the raising of Lazarus (John 11:38–44), a sign pointing ahead to Jesus' own empty tomb.

Historical Witness

Belief that Jesus rose from the dead was central to the earliest Christian proclamation. Josephus's Testimonium notes that followers who loved Jesus did not cease after crucifixion, and that the Christian movement persisted (Josephus on Jesus). The physical setting of Judea—tombs, ossuaries, and pilgrimage sites—continues to be studied by archaeologists and historians; for Second Temple textual context, see Qumran and the Israel Museum scroll project.

  • Resurrection hope is centered in Jesus' identity.
  • Belief leads to life that death cannot cancel.
  • The Lazarus sign anticipates Easter.

Near-Death Encounters with the Living Christ

Modern NDE literature includes many who report meeting Jesus at the threshold of death. Odell H. described Jesus “in all His glory,” radiating light and love, speaking without moving lips (Odell H NDE, NDERF). Jerald H. returned from clinical death having known an ocean of love in a luminous presence (Jerald H NDE). Such accounts resonate with Jesus' word: He is life for those who believe.
