Living Water: Jesus and the Woman at Jacob's Well

At noon, tired from the road, Jesus sat down by a well in Samaria and asked a woman for a drink. That small request crossed a wall that had stood for centuries, and it opened one of the longest conversations Jesus has in the Gospels.

One simple fact

John's Gospel itself notes how unusual this was. When Jesus asks her for water, the woman answers, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" and John adds, "(For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)" (John 4:9, NIV, Bible Gateway).

Jesus in His own words

"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

— Jesus, John 4:13-14 (NIV)

He offered the same gift to a woman His culture told Him to ignore, and she ran back to her town to say, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did" (John 4:29).

A historical reference

When the woman says, "Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain" (John 4:20), she is pointing to Mount Gerizim, the Samaritans' holy mountain above Shechem. The first-century Jewish historian Josephus records that the Judean ruler John Hyrcanus captured "Shechem and Gerizzim" and the Samaritan temple there, "which temple was now deserted two hundred years after it was built" (Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews 13.9.1, Whiston translation, Sacred-Texts). That destruction, more than a century before Jesus, helps explain the bitterness between the two peoples. Jesus answered the old dispute with something new: "a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth" (John 4:23).

A firsthand account of meeting Jesus

A boy named Corey L. told the Near Death Experience Research Foundation that he drowned while swimming in 2007 and had no heartbeat for a long stretch before he was resuscitated. After seeing family members who had died, he reported:

"I suddenly felt like I was on a moving platform and I saw Jesus! I knew instantly who he was, although he didn't tell me. He was dressed in a white robe. His presence felt warm and I could feel love coming off him. Jesus said I should go back to the living and live my life."

— Corey L NDE 6639, NDERF

Like the woman at the well, he met someone who already knew him and sent him back to live differently. This is his account as he reported it.

For today

Whatever wall you think stands between you and God, Jesus is already sitting on your side of it, asking for a conversation. Ask Him for the water that does not run dry.
