Matthew's Gospel does not end with a farewell. It ends with a promise: the risen Jesus sends His disciples into the world and vows to remain with them until history itself is finished.
One simple fact
The final scene of Matthew places the eleven disciples in Galilee, on a mountain Jesus had appointed, where He commissions them and closes with the words of perpetual presence (Matthew 28:16–20). The promise is not an editorial aside; it is the last sentence of Jesus' speech in the book. Read the passage in the NIV on Bible Gateway.
Jesus' own words
“And teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Historical backdrop
That commission is set in Galilee—the same region where first-century Jewish community life is now archaeologically visible. At Magdala (Migdal) on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, excavators have uncovered two Second Temple–period synagogues from about the first century, including the well-known Magdala Stone with one of the earliest carved menorahs. The Biblical Archaeology Society reports the University of Haifa announcement of the second synagogue and notes how these finds illuminate Jewish religious and social gatherings in Galilee during the era of Jesus' ministry. A firsthand encounter
Heidi Barr, raised by an atheist father who called Jesus “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind,” reports that after a horseback accident left her clinically dead as a teenager, she met Jesus face to face. In her life review she says she saw Him with her from the womb onward: “I saw Him at every stage in my life. He was always there.” Sent back, she says He told her, “Good, bad, or indifferent, I'm here. Your life is in good hands.” She later wrote, “After I died, I knew Jesus was with me… every step of the way.” Reported by CBN News: “'He Is Real': Her Atheist Dad Told Her Jesus Was a Hoax, Then She Died and Met Him Face to Face” (Aug. 24, 2025).
Matthew's closing line and Barr's testimony point the same direction: Jesus' presence is not a temporary comfort for the mountain in Galilee—it is the promise that holds for the whole age.
