Peace, Be Still: Jesus Calms the Storm on the Sea of Galilee

Jesus Research · 9/26/2026

The Gospels remember a night crossing of the Sea of Galilee when fear filled a small boat—and Jesus answered with a word that stills both weather and hearts.

One simple fact

Mark, Matthew, and Luke all report that Jesus and His disciples were caught in a violent storm on the lake, that the boat was taking on water, and that the disciples woke Jesus in panic. Mark alone preserves the short command Jesus spoke to the elements before the wind ceased and a great calm followed (Mark 4:35–41). Read the full scene in the NIV on Bible Gateway.

Jesus' own words

“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.”

Historical backdrop

In 1986, after drought lowered the Sea of Galilee, two brothers from Kibbutz Ginosar found the remains of an ancient fishing boat on the northwest shore near Magdala. Radiocarbon dating places the vessel roughly between 100 BC and 100 AD—the same era and waters as Jesus' ministry. The roughly 8.2-meter (27-foot) craft, often called the Ancient Galilee Boat or “Jesus Boat,” matches the kind of boat used for fishing and transport on the lake in the first century. After conservation it is displayed at the Yigal Allon Center in Kibbutz Ginosar. The museum itself introduces the find with Matthew's storm narrative. A firsthand encounter

Weston G. reports that as a boy he was thrown from a rowboat into the flooded Elkhorn River and, unable to swim, went under for what he estimated as about twelve minutes. He describes dazzling colors, then a dark tunnel opening into brilliant white light that took the form of Jesus. He says he wanted to stay, but Jesus sent him back; the next thing he knew, his head struck a tree limb and a hand pulled him from the water. Before that day he had never been inside a church. He later wrote that meeting Jesus felt like “facing the greatest being in the entire universe.” Reported on the Near Death Experience Research Foundation: Weston G NDE 3266.

The disciples asked, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Weston’s account, told in his own words, points the same way: the One who stills the storm is also the One who meets the drowning and sends them back with peace.
